News from Lake Powell
ARAMARK Slip and Buoy Agreement
The Lake Powell Yacht Club continues to battle the National Park Service over the new slip and buoy agreement. After some months of waiting for a reply from local Glen Canyon National Recreation Area management they have elevated the issue to the Denver office. You can read more at their web site at www.lpyachtclub.org
We recommend that you join the Lake Powell Yacht Club and stay informed of their efforts to be the voice of the Lake Powell boater.
Lake Level
The big question is whether the Castle Rock Cut will be deepened.
You can check the current lake level here as well as the current snow pack data.
But how low can it go? Dead pool (the level at which no more water can pass through Glen Canyon Dam) is at 3370 feet. At this level Lake Powell will still be 50 miles long but some other significant events will have occurred. First, the dam and Navajo Generating Station will no longer be able to generate electricity (3490 feet). Second the City of Page will have no drinking water (3480 feet). Lake Powell will remain an object of beauty and source of great recreation activity for ever.
Draining the Lake
Although things have gone quiet recently on this issue we have to keep up our guard. There is currently a move to change the name of Lake Powell to Glen Canyon reservoir. This is being pushed by the same people that want the lake drained and they may be using this as a first step in a renewed effort to drain the lake.
The Friends of Lake Powell are the group fighting for us and we recommend that you join them.
